Postcards of the Prehistoric Monuments of Western Europe
Welcome to Postcards of the Prehistoric Monuments of Western Europe. Over the following months I will be adding to this site images from my personal collection of approximately 1200 old postcards of the megalithic sites of Europe, mostly dating from the first few decades of the 20th century, though postcards from later dates will also be included. The postcards included here feature all manner of monuments, from stone circles, cromlechs, stone rows, menhirs, holed stones and ancient inscribed stones, petroglyphs and cup-marked stones, chambered tombs and dolmens, the impressive and massive temples of Malta and Gozo, passage graves, entrance graves, portal tombs, hunebedden, allées couvertes, cairns, cists, round barrows and long barrows, settlements, beehive huts and fogous, as well as a small number of hill figures, also urns, pottery, lunulae and other artifacts. I will also include follies or relatively modern monuments which pay homage to those of the past they mimic. In these cases the pages will be tagged "follies" at the bottom. This will not be a speedy process as the cards will all need to be scanned and uploaded, and then arranged.
